The Week in Stats: Strong Summer and Cruise Travel as Spending Increases

This week in travel industry statistics continued to show signs for summer travel and increased spending for the travel industry with river and multigenerational cruise demand remaining strong.
A consumer survey by Travel Leaders Group revealed that over 95 percent of those polled “have or will take” at least one leisure trip in 2014.
“Make no mistake, vacation travel bookings are very robust this year. Our survey mirrors recent research…that affirms there is an increase in leisure travelers and what they are spending,” said Barry Liben, CEO of Travel Leaders Group.
According to a new Harris Poll, Americans aren’t letting their poor outlook on the economy impact their summer travel plans.
Two-thirds of Americans (66%) have at least one leisure trip planned for the summer of 2014 (May through August), a slight increase from 64 percent last year and a more notable growth when compared to the 60 percent who were planning a summer leisure trip two years ago.
CruiseCompete and EyeforTravel Ltd. Recently released their Cruise Index for June 2014 revealing a score of 148, the same as May 2014, and one point lower than June 2013. Regional pricing indices saw decreases in the Bahamas, Caribbean and Europe, the company reported. The CruiseCompete Cruise Index is calculated based on the average daily per-passenger (double occupancy) cost for the lowest-priced ocean view cabin category on a seven-night cruise on the six largest North American cruise lines.
