Travel Tip: More River Cruises Add Biking to Their Itineraries

If you thought taking a cruise was synonymous sitting around the Lido deck with a Piña Colada, think again. Smaller river cruises are actually incorporating on-the-ground biking trips into your itinerary.

AmaWaterways, which does river cruises, and Backroads, which runs cycling tours, have partnered up to create shore excursions. Starting with cruises along the Danube, you’ll be able to tour river towns, museums and restaurants on bike, with a support van carrying your gear.

Avalon Waterways, another river cruise line, has a biking excursion in Holland, which is known for its cycling culture with designated bike paths everywhere you go.

And if you really want to explore a region like a local, consider a barge and bike tour in countries like Holland, France, and Belgium.

Barges are small, fitting anywhere from four to 20 passengers, and can access waterways that the bigger boats can’t. So you can just get off the boat, bike into the little towns, villages and vineyards, and then get back on the boat at the end of the day.
