Honeymoons are a time for newlywed couples to take some time off and celebrate their union.

Where do couples go as their first getaway as a married couple? Beth Drummonds, who serves as the inside sales travel planner for Alpha Voyages in Winchester, said that tropical places like the Caribbean and Hawaii are near the top of the list of places her agency has sent newlyweds.

“We also send people to various countries in Europe, like Italy, and cruises,” she said.

Maria Dutton, owner of Passages Travel and Cruises in Front Royal, said that lately her agency has sent couples on cruises and to places in Europe and to Disney World.

“Couples have started doing their weddings at Disney and end up just staying there for their honeymoon,” she said.

For couples who are on a budget, when it comes to their honeymoon, both Alpha Voyages and Passages Travel and Cruises offer cruises to places like the Bahamas and deals to stay in places in Jamaica and Mexico.

Dutton said that some of the more extravagant places Passages Travel and Cruises has sent couples to include the South Pacific and to Bora Bora, while Drummonds said Alpha Voyages has sent newlyweds to various Sandals resort locations throughout the world.

“Not everyone is the same when it comes to planning their honeymoon,” Drummonds said. “I’ve had people who have gone on their honeymoons have done things like being driven around while in Europe.”

Drummonds offered a tip for couples planning their honeymoons.

“Don’t plan a big trip like this as a couple,” she said. “Let the travel agency handle it. If a couple plans a trip like this and if the husband or wife mess up the plans, they’ll get blamed for it.”

Dutton suggested that the couple set up a honeymoon registry if they want to save some money. 

“Instead of asking for wedding presents, they can set up a honeymoon registry and have someone else pay for it,” she said.
