Carnival Corp. to build new cruise destination on Grand Bahama, expand presence on second Bahamas island

For the expansion of the company’s footprint on Little San Salvador, a 2,400-acre island, plans are to build on the north side and add a pier that can accommodate larger ships. Half Moon Cay is on the west side and encompasses 3 percent of the island including a tender marina that takes in visitors from both Holland America and Carnival Cruise Line. The new construction combined with Half Moon Cay will mean 10 percent of the island will be developed, officials said, with the remaining portion to remain untouched, which was part of the company’s original purchase agreement for the island, to keep the majority of it as a nature preserve and wild bird sanctuary.
