To keep holiday costs low, there are other tricks to booking. Lonely Planet recommends focussing on older cruise ships to help save the pounds.

“Just like we gravitate towards the latest iPhone and dream of signing up for one of those fancy Teslas, cruisers want everything that’s shiny and new: bigger cabins, upgraded amenities and modernised ship layouts,” they said.

“But letting an older ship often yields some of the best deals in the industry.

“Get the input of a travel agent and scout out three – or four-day itineraries on older, small vessels in the following destinations: the Bahamas, Mexico, western Caribbean and Cuba.”
