Cruise ship tour: Step back in time aboard luxurious Sea Cloud II, a 1930s-themed ship

With an imposing bowsprit, no less than 23 sails and a trio of masts that soar the height of a 15-story building, Sea Cloud Cruises’ 94-guest Sea Cloud II is no ordinary cruise ship. 

The ultra-luxe, 384-foot barque was built in 2001 with rigging that is handled by crew members versus the electronically controlled rigging of other sail-assisted cruise ships.  In addition to the sails, the Sea Cloud II also has diesel engines that enable the ship to stick to regularly scheduled itineraries.

A worthy fleetmate to the legendary Sea Cloud, which was built in 1931 as a private yacht for cereal heiress Marjorie Merriweather Post, the Sea Cloud II boasts 1930s-themed interiors that are infused with warm wood tones, brass, etched glass and period-style fittings.

Instead of modern shipboard distractions, Sea Cloud II has a traditional library with windows that overlook the bow, a lounge that can accommodate all guests, an awning-covered Lido Bar and a cushioned deck area called the Blue Lagoon, where the pastime is gazing up at the sails. 

The ship also has an open-seating restaurant, a small spa, a fitness room and a platform that allows guests to board zodiacs or, conditions permitting, take a refreshing swim in the sea.
