The first cruise from Rocky Point in Mexico has set sail. Here’s what we know

The long wait for a cruise from Rocky Point is over. On Jan. 9, the first cruise ship departed from the Mexican city officially called Puerto Peñasco for an 11-day tour of the Sea of Cortez. 

It’s been a long time coming for Arizonans looking forward to convenient access to cruising as well as for Puerto Peñasco officials and residents hoping to boost tourism. 

The company taking the risk on the new “Treasures of the Sea of Cortez” sailing is the  U.K.-based Cruise and Maritime Voyages, which specializes in cruises for passengers who would rather drive than fly to the port. Its refurbished, 550-passenger Astoria ship is running the route.

About the ‘Treasures of the Sea of Cortez’ cruise

• It lasts 11 days and visits seven ports. 
• The ship holds 550 passengers. 
• The Astoria is a bit smaller than other cruise liners, so it can maneuver into ports bigger ships can’t visit.
• Three sailings are scheduled for 2020 so far: Jan. 9, Jan. 20 and Jan. 31. 
• The onboard currency is the U.S. dollar.
• The power outlets are European, so bring a converter to plug in your phone and other devices.

How much does it cost? What’s included?

Prices start at around $1,500 per person and rise based on what stateroom you choose. Here’s what you get:

• All meals.
• Afternoon tea and late-night snacks. 
• Captain’s cocktail party.
• Self-service tea and coffee from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. 
• Entertainment, cabarets and performances by the ship’s violinist and pianist.
