Budget honeymoons: How to plan your ultimate romantic break for less

You’ll flit from port to port, one day browsing the high end boutiques of St Barts, the next admiring the pastel-coloured architecture of Curaçao. If you’re prepared to be flexible with dates you can find seven-day sailings for under £1,500pp (book early for discounts of up to 20 per cent). By comparison, a single night in a luxury Caribbean villa can cost over £3,500.

How to do it: Star Clippers (starclippers.co.uk) offers seven-day Grenadine Islands cruises, round-trip from Barbados, starting from £1,540pp. Virgin Atlantic offers return flights from Gatwick to Bridgetown from £408pp (virginatlantic.com).

Swap the Amalfi coast’s big hitters for its lesser-known gems

Synonymous with romance, the spectacular scenery of the Sorrentine peninsula is perennially popular with newlyweds. The precarious houses of Positano and Amalfi draw the crowds, but the quieter hilltop resort town of Ravello also offers dramtic views. “Set like an eagle’s nest above the dizzying landscape of the coast, Ravello is the most peaceful and charming resort on the Neapolitan Riviera,” writes Joanna Symons. The hamlet of Pogerola, the village of Furore and the towns of Minori and Maiori are also calmer options. Head to these in the warmest months of the off season (April, excluding Easter, and October) and you’ll find lower prices and fewer tourists.
