Benidorm’s Crissy Rock recalls ‘terrifying’ coronavirus cruise experience

Crissy Rock has opened up about her ‘terrifying’ experience after being trapped on quarantined cruise ship over coronavirus fears.
The Benidorm actress, 61, and husband Julian Buck were on board a luxury Queen Mary 2 ship to celebrate their honeymoon – two years after tying the knot.
However, it was less than idyllic when they were anchored at sea following fears over the virus.
During an appearance on Good Morning Britain – hours after the couple were able to return to the UK – they explained it was ‘very sombre’.
‘It was terrifying to think how close you were to where the virus was, but Cunard’s main priority was to keep everyone on the ship safe,’ Crissy told hosts Kate Garraway and Adil Ray.
‘We were all fed and watered. We were treated fabulously.
‘We knew something was going wrong when it started to go slow.’
The pair had been planning their honeymoon since their 2018 nuptials – and were forced to push it back when Crissy took part in All New Monty last year.
They were meant to travel around Oman, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Vietnam, Singapore before finishing up in Hong Kong.
But it went wrong shortly after they boarded the cruise liner.
‘We got told, more or less, they [staff on board] said, “Have you been in touch with any Chinese people? We said not yet” and they [shook their head],’ she continued.
‘We didn’t realise how quick the virus had spread and how pandemic it was. They couldn’t afford to risk it.
‘No one on the ship had coronavirus but passengers have been banned from leaving the vessel with food and fuel supplies being provided by smaller boats.
‘Anyone that coughed or sneezed or even passed wind, everyone was like, “ooooh….”’
Julian agreed: ‘It was very sombre, when it was finally announced we were going to Australia for a supply boat to bring fuel and food on board, that day was very quiet.’
But, while Crissy admitted she would be ‘dubious to get on a dinghy’ after her experience on board, she is adamant to see the humour in the situation.
‘It’s not funny but you’ve got to look at the funny side,’ she added. ‘I’ve got loads of new material [in her stand-up show] about the cruise.’
More than 5,000 people in the UK have been tested for coronavirus so far, with nine people testing positive.
Reports from China suggest there have been more than 2,000 deaths and 70,000 confirmed infections of the virus.
