AA’s preflight testing program is good news for USVI

As airlines continue their push for more preflight testing, the U.S. Virgin Islands is hopeful that its entry into American Airlines’ testing program this week will strengthen efforts to minimize the spread of Covid-19 in the territory, according to Gov. Albert Bryan Jr.

The partnership American and testing service LetsGetChecked utilizes an at-home Covid-19 nasal swab test with observation by a medical professional via a virtual visit.

Flyers can order the testing kit online, which costs $129. Test results from this program are received on average 48 hours upon receipt in the lab, American says.

Entry regulations for the USVI require proof of a negative test done within five days of departure.

American has also partnered with Grenada and St. Lucia, which require proof of a negative test within seven days of the flight, and Jamaica, which requires proof of a negative test within 10 days.

“Since the beginning of our response to the pandemic more than nine months ago, we have worked to ensure we do everything to protect our residents and visitors,” Bryan said.

“American Airlines has been one of our major partners, and we are thankful that passengers across the U.S. mainland have another option to get tested before traveling here,” he said.

The at-home testing program will be available effective Dec. 9 for passengers from the U.S.

“The at-home solution adds another layer of protection, convenience and confidence for those traveling to the USVI,” said Joseph Boschulte, the islands’ commissioner of tourism.
