According to a press release this week, United has unveiled cruise-travel benefits for U.S.-based MileagePlus members in a partnership with the world’s largest cruise agency, World Travel Holdings.

As a result, members can use miles or a combination of miles and money to book cruise vacations.

Known as MileagePlus Cruise Awards, the new benefits allow members to redeem their miles with more than two dozen different cruise lines offering worldwide sailings that include popular destinations like the Caribbean, South America, Europe and Mexico, among others.

Plus, United’s MileagePlus members can also acquire additional miles for cruise travel when they book through United Cruises, a part of the company that launched four years ago.

“Our cruise-travel redemption program provides MileagePlus members a unique new way to use their miles for exceptional travel experiences,” said United’s vice president of loyalty Praveen Sharma in a statement. “The program is an excellent addition to the other diverse options we offer to redeem miles, including hotel stays, car rentals, merchandise and auctions for once-in-a-lifetime adventures.”

The Chicago Business Journal’s Lewis Lazare points out that “airlines have become an important cog in the growing cruise line industry as they fly tens of thousands of ship passengers every week to and from destinations to take cruises of varying duration.”

Members can call and talk to a cruise consultant at 1-800-474-2052 or visit cruises.mileageplus.com to redeem miles and make reservations.
