ImagiNerding: Remember the World Cruise at Walt Disney World?

Do you remember the World Cruise at Walt Disney World? How about the Moonlight Cruise?

No, these weren’t boat trips around the World Showcase Lagoon at EPCOT Center. They were special cruises you could take on authentic steamships on the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake. During its first decade Walt Disney world was known as “the Vacation Kingdom of the World,” and these were unique offerings.

Imagine a 50-minute cruise around the waterways of Walt Disney World that showed you the resort hotels, Treasure Island (later renamed Discovery Island) and other sights. Or you could sign up for a romantic showboat cruise with cocktails, soft drinks and a Dixieland Duo performing ragtime.

Why would Disney build two fully-functional steamships, The Southern Seas and Ports-O-Call, just to take people on trips around the Seven Seas Lagoon and Bay Lake? The World Cruises are an interesting chapter in the history of Walt Disney World. Check out my video to learn more!

Pretty crazy, huh?

I wonder how well something like the Moonlight or Showboat Cruises would do at Walt Disney World today. Could this be a successful up-charge attraction beyond the parks?

Were you lucky enough to take a World Cruise or the Moonlight Cruise at Walt Disney World?
