Honduras: Surge in Violent Crime Prompts Travel Warning

Due to widespread violent crime reaching epidemic levels, the U.S. Dept. of State has issued an updated travel warning. Honduras now has the highest murder rate in the world, and San Pedro Sula, a longtime transit hub for travelers heading to the Copan Mayan ruins and the resort island of Roatan, has been rated the world’s most violent city. Much of the criminal activity revolves around drug trafficking and related gang warfare; it does not target tourists specifically. However, the security situation has deteriorated so much that the U.S. Peace Corps withdrew its volunteers in Jan. 2012. U.S. citizens visiting Honduras are being advised to remain vigilant at all times, travel in groups whenever feasible, and avoid traveling or walking anywhere at night.
