We’re at the peak of hurricane season. If you’re planning to go on a cruise right now, there are a few things you need to be aware of first.

Hurricane season officially runs from June 1 through November 30, but the weather is usually most volatile between now and late October.

If there is bad weather ahead, it’s up to the captain whether or not to sail to the ports listed on your itinerary.

If your ship has to be rerouted to a different port, or remain at sea, the cruise line is under no obligation to give you a refund or credit.

There’s a lower risk of your cruise being affected in the southern Caribbean (islands like Aruba, Bonaire, and Curacao). But still, there are no guarantees.

The good news? Caribbean and Mexico cruises tend to be more affordable this time of year, so you can take those savings and put them toward travel insurance.

Just always make sure to purchase comprehensive insurance from a third party. Insurance sold by the cruises isn’t always in your best interest, and may not cover you from door-to-door if something goes wrong.
