After visiting our daughter Amy in San Diego, my husband, Alex, and I boarded the Holland American ship MS Statendam for a 35-day circle cruise of Hawaii, Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands.
After five days at sea, we arrived in Honolulu. We had been there before, but were eager to see the Pearl Harbor memorial that we missed. We were disappointed to find it closed due the government shutdown. There was a large group of German tourists onboard who were also disappointed. The other national parks, like the volcano tours, were also closed.
