Travel group hosting ‘River Cruise’ information event in Birmingham

Cadillac Travel Group and Viking River Cruises will host a “River Cruise” information event, 6-9 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15 at Scavolini by Cucina Moda, 202 East Maple in Birmingham. This free event will feature information about River Cruises, the fastest growing segment where travelers can immerse themselves in the destination as well as light refreshments and beverages.

Viking River Cruises is the most award-winning river cruise line since 2004 and has been recognized consistently by both Condé Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure magazines for their outstanding quality, as well as being named “Best River Cruise Line” multiple times by Cruise Critic. Viking recently announced the addition of their new ocean division with its maiden ocean voyages beginning in spring 2015.

“Nothing quite compares to a river cruise,” says Jill Jones, Vice President of The Cadillac Travel Group, 3000 Town Center, Ste 2120, in Southfield.

“Where else but on a river can you journey into the very heart of the world’s greatest cities and most charming towns, discovering the true nature of the land and its people, unpacking just once and enjoying the ever-changing scenery along the banks?”

“Just 20 years ago, the modern river cruise industry didn’t exist. There were privately owned river ships available to sail down a few rivers in Germany, and a few paddle wheelers along the Mississippi, but generally trips were prohibitively expensive or operated by barges with only a handful of intrepid passengers and few amenities,” Jones said.

But in the last decade, river cruising’s popularity has grown dramatically, and more than 500,000 people now take a river cruise each year. Our typical traveler is a professional, 50 or over, well traveled, and looking for something different,” Jones said.

Viking River Cruise destinations range from the United States to Europe, Russia, Egypt, and even China and Southeast Asia. Many ships are recently built and designed for comfortable travel, with amenities like hotel-style beds, spacious public areas, verandas and even suites. Also, as ocean ships have grown larger and larger, many travelers are discovering river cruising provides a more intimate, comfortable alternative.

Leading the way in innovative design are the Viking Longships, now sailing on Europe’s great rivers. With patented designs for both stateroom configuration and the ship’s bow, these vessels have received acclaim for their cutting edge design, outstanding quality, and state-of-the-art engineering.
