How to Join the Crowdfunding Converts for Your Own Honeymoon or Travel

Contributions can be made to cover the cost of everything from airline tickets and hotel costs to special experiences during the trip, such as snorkeling, skydiving or cave exploring.

Some of the other well-known crowdfunding sites for travel include Traveler’s Joy and myTab.

Created on a stoop in Brooklyn in 2004, Traveler’s Joy is all about skipping the shiny new blender or toaster as a wedding gift and opting instead for lifelong memories.

The average amount raised on the site for honeymoons is about $3,000, with one couple raising a staggering $44,000 for a six-month honeymoon, says Brandon Warner, president and co-founder.

About 70% of Traveler’s Joy users register to raise funds specifically for honeymoon travel expenses. Around 30% use the site to raise money for items associated with the honeymoon, such as ski gear for a ski vacation or a nice pair of sunglasses and his-and-hers flip-flops for a beach vacation.

Crowdfunding is creating a new dynamic in how people honeymoon, Warner says.

“As the honeymoon registry has become more mainstream, people are thinking more adventurously. It’s changing the way we travel, how far we go, how long we go and where we go,” says Warner, who has seen more and more couples over the years taking long, far-flung trips to such places as Southeast Asia and New Zealand.

“I think back to when I was younger, and if people had had more opportunities in terms of funding, where might they have gone?” he says. “I had one friend who wanted to go to Paris, but couldn’t afford it, so they went to Seattle or San Francisco. If they had used a honeymoon registry, they might have been able to go on that dream trip.”
