Six of the best river cruise companies
Uniworld: You don’t get much more luxurious than Uniworld’s boutique designer ships, which sail the rivers of Europe, Russia, China and Vietnam. New this year was the SS Maria Theresa, taking the fleet up to 19.
The all-inclusive ships have extravagant chateau hotel interiors thanks to designers from Uniworld’s sister company, five-star Red Carnation hotels. Gourmet food and exceptional included excursions complete the package.
In the UK Uniworld cruises are marketed by Titan, and includes its VIP Home Departure service, all gratuities, unlimited wine, beer, spirits and soft drinks and free onboard wifi. Although most of the 130-passenger ships sail in Europe, the new Ganges Voyager II is in India and there are Uniworld itineraries in China, Egypt, Vietnam and Cambodia. 0808 102 1330; /titantravel.co.uk/uniworld
Viking: This Norwegian-owned line is defined by its Scandinavian style. Its innovative Longships are sleek and contemporary with a timeless Nordic design. The 190-passenger ships have some of the largest river cruise suites available and even standard staterooms have balconies.
The ships’ indoor/outdoor Aquavit Terrace has glass panels that open to create an alfresco lounge and dining area as an alternative to the main dining room.
