The majority of boat owners can’t get enough on being on board through the summer months, but at this time of year, their enthusiasm for getting out on the water declines. Many vessels are brought onto dry land or into port for the winter months, whilst owners bide their time until spring.

For competing sailors there are also a number of winter series taking place around the UK and the turnout for these events is usually impressive. If you are defending a title or looking to claim it from a rival, then there is no option but to set sail.

Personal Preparation

If you are planning to sail this winter, you need to ensure that you are well-equipped. Most boating forums would recommend that thermal layers topped with a good quality dry suit is the best attire for warm, wind proof and water resistant sailing. This approach to dress will ensure that warm air is trapped between the layers and also means you can remove or add layers as conditions change.

The extremities are the first to feel the cold and it can be difficult to remain in control of your vessel with numb fingers or a pounding headache. To minimise these symptoms, it is important to invest in a waterproof, fleecy hat and warm gloves that still allow you ease of movement. Thermal socks and waterproof footwear can also be highly beneficial.

Be aware that all the additional layers mean adjustments need to be made to ensure life jackets and other floatation aids have a good fit.

Through the winter months our bodies need more fuel to generate the energy needed to keep warm and perform. For this reason, you need a good supply of provisions when you are embarking on a winter sailing trip. Flasks of hot drinks and a plentiful supply of food will make for a far more enjoyable experience.

Boat Preparation

Boat covers can be an advisable purchase, as these provide protection for your vessel against the elements between trips. The covers are designed to be easy to remove and can save considerable time in cleaning and clearing your boat before you can head off.

You will need to ensure that your vessel is seaworthy before each trip with general checks. Ensure that fuel and other liquids don’t freeze and are kept topped up.
