“We are going to invest $400million into all of our ships and our islands,” he added, referring to NCL’s private Caribbean island resorts: Great Stirrup Cay in the Eastern Caribbean and Harvest Cay, due to open in Southern Belize in November.

Boell says the decision to improve the quality of NCL food was taken to make the cruise line more upmarket.

“We are not going into a shipyard for a week and repainting a little bit, we are really changing everything,” he says.

“The colours will be more cappuccino, more modern, but every ship will have its own look and style.

“It is not just putting a new colour on everything, it is all new furniture and carpets; it is getting all the American-Hawaii stuff out.”

Boell says “interaction” with chefs from Oceania Cruises have led to changes in “how you prepare things, recipes, and creating better menus.

“But we also put more money into a better quality of food.”
