Hurricane Matthew leads to travel delays, cancellations, cruise …
Hurricane Matthew is prompting delays, cancellations and changed itineraries for passengers traveling by air and sea.
Two of the three major airports in the region said flights to the Caribbean were affected Tuesday, while cruise lines were rerouting ships to avoid Matthew.
Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport reported 79 delays and 38 cancellations due to the storm. Flights to and from Port-au-Prince, Haiti; Kingston and Montego Bay, Jamaica; and the Turks and Caicos Islands were affected, according to an airport spokeswoman.
Some airlines, including JetBlue, Southwest and United, are issuing travel waivers that eliminate penalties for changed flights.
The Fort Lauderdale airport said on Twitter that passengers should check with individual airlines for the status of flights.
“The airport is closely monitoring Hurricane Matthew to determine any impacts the storm will have on this area,” according to the Twitter feed, @FLLFlyer. “At this time, the airport is fully operational.”
At Miami International Airport, 13 arrivals and 11 departures were canceled as of Tuesday afternoon, spokesman Greg Chin said. Flights affected were to and from the Turks and Caicos, as well as Kingston; Port-au-Prince and Cap-Haitien, Haiti; Nassau, Bahamas; and Holguin and Camaguey, Cuba.
Palm Beach International Airport had no delays or cancellations Tuesday, according to spokeswoman Casandra Davis. Airlines were beginning to make plans and should have more information as Matthew approaches, Davis said.
Astley Jobson was affected by a canceled flight in Fort Lauderdale. The former North Miami resident was trying to get back to his home in Saint Ann, Jamaica, which was brushed but not battered by Matthew. He was hoping to get a flight later Tuesday.
“Everything is OK. The house is not damaged. My lady friend checked on the house and everything was OK,” Jobson said.

Carnival Cruise Line announced that “a number of our ships have been re-routed to the western Caribbean and Mexico to stay west of the storm. In other instances, we’ve modified the order of ports.”

Norwegian Cruise Line said the itinerary for Norwegian Sky that departed Monday has been revised and will visit Key West and Cozumel rather than the Bahamas.
