NEW YORK — Oprah Winfrey fans, your ship has come in.
Holland America and O, The Oprah Magazine, on Thursday announced a new partnership that will include a cruise to Alaska with the media mogul, actress and longtime talk show host.
Winfrey will spend two days aboard Holland America’s 2,104-passenger Eurodam as it sails to The Last Frontier in July on what’s being dubbed the O, The Oprah Magazine Share the Adventure cruise.
Kicking off July 15 in Seattle, the seven-night voyage will feature exclusive programming developed with the magazine’s editors including an off-shoot of Oprah’s Book Club.
“We plan to do something special on board with our book club,” longtime Winfrey friend and O, The Oprah Magazine editor at large Gayle King said Thursday at an event at Hearst Headquarters in New York to announce the partnership. “It’s no secret to anyone in this room how much Oprah loves books.”
King, who also will be on the sailing, said such Winfrey-inspired activities as morning meditation and stretching also would be on the agenda along with a behind-the-scenes look at O, The Oprah Magazine.
King said the trip would mark Oprah’s first time in Alaska.
“It’s actually on her bucket list, so she is very excited about this,” King said.
The partnership will bring four more magazine-themed cruises over the next two years that are being called O, The Oprah Magazine Adventure of Your Life sailings. In addition to magazine-inspired activities, the trips will be headlined by members of Winfrey’s SuperSoul 100, a list of authors, artists, entrepreneurs and other people Winfrey finds inspirational.
The additional voyages will include an 11-night trip to the Southern Caribbean on Holland America’s newest ship, Koningsdam, in November. The three other sailings will be seven-night outings to the Eastern Caribbean, Alaska and Western Caribbean that take place in March, August and October of 2018, respectively.
In addition, as part of the partnership, more than 300 other Holland America voyages taking place in North America from August 2017 through the end of 2018 will feature activities inspired by O, The Oprah Magazine including new meditation classes, tai chi, healthy cooking demonstrations and onboard book clubs.
Speaking with USA TODAY after Thursday’s announcement, O, The Oprah Magazine editor in chief Lucy Kaylin suggested the partnership with Holland America was a natural fit.
“I think it’s absolutely the case that there is that power of transformation in a cruise. There is that business of leaving (a ship) a very different person than you were when you came on,” she said, noting she recently saw this for herself when trying out a Holland America sailing. “And that’s O. That’s what we want for our reader. We hope the experience of reading an issue is that she’s a different person — a better, happier, more fulfilled person — when she closes the thing than when she first picked it up.”
King told USA TODAY she expects the cruise with Winfrey to be a very different kind of experience than past events with the star.
“We’ve never done anything on the water before,” she noted. “People will get a chance to interact with her in a way that they don’t normally get on land, because you’re all right there.”
The magazine will kick off the partnership in March with a contest that gives readers the chance to join the July cruise with Winfrey. The April issue of the magazine will feature a spread on Holland America.
