ABOARD THE AVALON VISIONARY — Avalon Waterways on Thursday had some big news for Outlander fans.
The Colorado-based river line in 2018 will operate a theme cruise with Diana Gabaldon, the author of the best-selling book series.
Gabaldon will mingle with passengers and sign books during the voyage, which will take place on the Danube River in Europe, Avalon managing director Terri Burke told cruise writers Thursday during a press event on an Avalon ship.
The 11-day trip will kick off June 5, 2018 with a land stay in Prague, where scenes from the Outlander television series were filmed. Participants then will board an Avalon vessel in Nuremberg, Germany for a sailing down the Rhine-Main-Danube Canal to the Danube.
The voyage will offer Outlander fans a rare chance to meet Gabaldon in an intimate setting, as it’ll be aboard the Avalon Illumination, which carries just 166 passengers.
The trip will include stops in Regensburg and Passau in Germany; Melk and Vienna in Austria; and Budapest, the end point for the trip. More information is available at a dedicated area of Avalon’s website.
Gabaldon already has ties to Avalon. In 2015, she served as godmother for one of the line’s ships on the Seine River in France.
The Gabaldon cruise is part of an expanded lineup of theme cruises that Avalon is planning for 2018. Burke said Avalon would offer more voyages themed around beer, wine and golf than in past years. The line also is adding more Christmastime sailings.
The number of wine-themed cruises is doubling from this year, Burke said. Popular with Avalon customers, the sailings feature a wine expert who leads tastings of wines from the region where the trip is taking place. The voyages also offer special wine pairings with lunch and dinner, and daytime tour options include visits to local wineries.
“This is about really being a part of that destination,” Burke noted. “Not everybody does it that way.”
