Actor Samira Wiley’s Favorite Way To Splurge? Travel!

It’s easy to fantasize about how you’d splurge after becoming famous, but for a lucky few, the fantasy is as far is reaching into your wallet to break out your AmEx.

The Handmaid’s Tale and Orange Is The New Black star Samira Wiley celebrated the launch of American Express’ new PayItPlanIt feature at a Manhattan cocktail party and chatted with Forbes about, what else, her favorite way to spend money.

“One of the best things that I can do for myself is travel around the world,” Wiley said. After her Palm Springs wedding this past march, Wiley and her new wife, Orange Is The New Black writer Lauren Morelli, set off to Italy for a honeymoon trip. “It was amazing there. I will always want to go back,” Wiley said.

Why Italy? “It’s so romantic. All the lovers are like kissing on the streets and I just thought I should go there for my honeymoon,” Wiley laughed, admitting “not much thought” went into picking the destination other than that it “looks great.”

Oh, and her wife is Italian American. Though the couple couldn’t go to the town Morelli’s family is from, it was still special to be in Italy together.

The coastal village of Positano was Wiley’s favorite part of the trip. “It was just beautiful,” Wiley said. “I loved the beaches [on the Amalfi Coast].” Another favorite for the self-proclaimed history fan? Pompeii. “Walking around a completely ruined city with everything still in tact was so cool for me,” Wiley said.

To remember the trip, Wiley and Morelli bought a couple of leather coats from a leather market in Florence. “They’re sitting all in my closet, they’re really great coats,” Wiley said with a smile.

Next trip for Wiley (other than shooting in Toronto) “I’ve never been to Paris, so I’d love to go there,” she said. “Traveling is just a part of my life and I want it to be a part of my life for a long time.”
