How I became an absolute cruise convert
It’s fair to say that cruising isn’t for everyone. And, until very recently, I thought cruising wasn’t for me, either. The buffet breakfasts, the endless cocktails and constant lazing by the pool, it just didn’t seem like a great way to spend a well-earned holiday.
I’d hiked through jungles in South America, dived with turtles in Costa Rica and bathed naked with the locals in Japan. Adventure is always at the heart of any trip I’d taken, so the idea of spending my holiday with a few thousand other strangers on what many call ‘floating cities’, seemed pretty far from my travel wish list.
But, as so often is the case, life throws us surprises every now and again and I ended up booking a cruise with my partner and visiting family, for a multi-generational holiday getaway. Little fuss, no cooking and no cleaning were the main drawcards for me personally, but I must say that one can certainly get used to the luxury of cruising, here’s why.

1. The logistics
It doesn’t matter if you’re on a four-night cruise from Brisbane to Sydney or a 28-day cruise through the Mediterranean, the logistics of a cruise holiday are well taken care of. Everything from exercise classes and social nights to on-land excursions and what to have for dinner – it’s all sorted. All you have to do is pick and choose what you want to do and make sure you get there on time. Simple!
2. The choice
If you’re an early riser who loves to get the heart pumping with a morning exercise class, or rather stay up well into the night watching performances, singers and musicians perform, there will be something for you. And if you’re travelling with family of different age groups and want to do different things, there is the luxury of doing that while not ever being too far from one another.
3. The photos
You might want to bring a camera along, but the great thing about a cruise is that there are roaming photographers that will document everything from your evening meal to getting all dolled up for the formal evening when everyone is looking their absolute best. Say cheese!
4. The freedom
Don’t want to do any excursions today and rather sit on the ship with a cocktail in hand by the pool? No worries. Or perhaps you want to see and do everything you possibly can and keep as active as possible during your trip? That’s ok, too. No matter what type of holiday-maker you are, there are options to satisfy all types and tastes. Bring your sense of adventure or your love of relaxation and enjoy the ride.
