WHEN it comes to honeymoon destinations most couples pick some exotic location – but this newly-wed couple picked – Preston.
Legend Liang, 33 and his new wife Carmen, travelled 6,000 miles to spend their holiday not on a sandy beach under a palm tree but in the Lancashire city.
He whisked Carmen from their home and spent three days in the town – even posing for photographs in their wedding attires at various landmarks.
The couple proudly posed outside the city’s Fishergate shopping centre, a university campus, outside a bus-stop, the Media factory building and in a park.
Journalist Legend choose the former cotton mill town as he had studied there at the University of Central Lancashire campus ten years ago.
He was keen to show Carmen some of his old haunts during a two week honeymoon in the UK during which they also visited Brighton and London.
Legend, who studied international journalism for a year at the uni in 2008, decided no other place was going to bring the wow-factor than Preston.
Legend, from Guandong in southern China, said: “Preston is a very important place for me.
“I wanted to show my wife where I studied, where I lived in Whitendale Halls and on Fishergate, and how lucky I was to have the opportunity to live in a lovely small city which had an international perspective.”
It had been 10 years since the uni grad had stepped foot in the city famed for its 94 metre spire at St Walburge’s Church – which is the tallest in Britain.
But Legend was amazed at the difference a decade made – with the campus now including its ‘Xbox building’ – a green, grey and black-coloured media centre.
He added: “The Media Factory was a building site so it’s nice to see that looking so good, Fylde Building has gone and there’s others being built while in the city centre the market has changed so much.”
The pair spent the last two weeks also visiting London, Brighton and Edinburgh as they flew back home to their native China on Thursday.
Legend, a Guangzhou Yangcheng Evening News reporter, said his wife had enjoyed her trip to Preston as much as him – proving the 14 hour flight was worth it.
He said: “She thought London was a huge city, just like we have back home but Preston was really nice because she could see how UK people live and work in a small city with everything they need being close by.”
Legend studied at Guangdong University of Foreign Study, an international partner of UCLan since 1986, for two years before his move to Preston.
He was taught in his home country by Matt Horn – the course leader of the international journalism franchise programme since it began in 2005.
Matt said: “Legend always showed the natural instincts required of a good journalist and is well respected in the city.
“UCLan and GDUFS have a long and happy history together and so I was delighted when Legend introduced his bride to be as I had taught her for GDUFS a couple of years after I was Legend’s teacher.”
Preston is famous as the location for the opening of the first KFC in the UK in 1965 and as the home of Preston North End FC.
