Our planned Egyptian honeymoon was cancelled last-minute by the outbreak of the first Gulf War (“Harry and Meghan, heed my honeymoon warning”, last week). What was left at short notice? Two weeks in the dying embers of the Soviet Union: poverty, prostitution, empty shops, locals queuing at the newly opened Pizza Hut on Red Square to spend a week’s salary on a slice.
