Couple’s Dh18,000 honeymoon trip ruined after dog chews passport
A honeymoon trip worth £4,000 to Bali was ruined for a newlywed couple who were sent back to the UK by border guards because their dog chewed the groom’s passport.
Daniel and Tia Farthing married last year and had been saving for the dream holiday on their first wedding anniversary on October 16. They landed in Indonesia after a 16-hour flight where airport officials told Daniel that his passport was not acceptable and the couple had to take the first flight back to the UK.
The couple’s four-year-old Labrador-collie cross, Milo, had bitten off a portion of Daniel’s travel papers when he was still a puppy. “He knows he’s done wrong because he’s been constantly coming to us for cuddles,” Mirror quoted Tia, 25, who works as hospital receptionist from Suffolk, as saying.
While her husband, 26, said that UK Border Force staff told him the document would not be an issue to travel to Indonesia as long as the details were still intact.
But the ordeal for the couple did not end there as whilst going back to Britain the couple stopped in Singapore where they were detained for seven hours and ran up a £216 phone bill talking to relatives in a panic.
To help the couple reimburse their money, Tia’s sister then launched a Gofundme page which has already raised £810, exceeding the initial £750 goal. The page reads: ‘This whole experience has been absolutely traumatic for both of them and they do not deserve this to happen to either of them. My sister is the most amazing woman I know and always looks out for others before herself; she’s constantly raising money for charity and a few months ago, she even cut off 12 inches of her hair to give to the Princess Trust which is just amazing’.
In a similar incident in October 2015, married couple Carly Baker, 30, and Chris Fee, 29, went through same circumstances and missed the beginning of their honeymoon after a US Airways employee found the bride’s passport to be too damaged for her to travel.
