Talk about ship shape.
Royal Caribbean is planning a new Miami headquarters that will look a lot like one of its cruise ships.
The 10-story building will have a curvy ship-shape form that will take up 350,000 square-feet at PortMiami, according to the cruise line. The project is pending full approval in May by Miami-Dade County, according to Melissa Charbonneau, a spokeswoman for the cruise line.
“The entire project will double capacity of our current campus from 2,200 to 4,200 employees,’’ she said.
The architect is Kenneth Drucker of New York architecture agency HOK.
“The modernization will apply shipbuilding design principles to create an undulating form inspired by the innovation, flow and graceful utility of our ships,’’ the cruise line described in one of its renderings released this week.
The side of the building and the roof will carry the Royal Caribbean crown and anchor logo.
Trees will rise from an opening in the center of the building.
The campus will include a new parking garage with electric car chargers, a green roof and rainwater collectors.
Construction is expected to begin in June and completed sometime in the fourth quarter of 2020.
Passengers and commuters around downtown Miami may have seen Royal Caribbean’s current main headquarters, a pair of buildings at the port at 1050 Caribbean Way. The company’s original headquarters dates back 50 years ago to a trailer on Biscayne Boulevard.
The proposed expansion plan comes after the cruise line unveiled its new sleek Terminal A at the port last November.
That building, which is home to the cruise line’s largest ships, the Symphony of the Seas and Allure of the Seas, has been dubbed “the crown of Miami” for its exterior which resembles the company’s logo.
