Cruise secrets: This surprising trick can save passengers up to 40 per cent on cruises

“Many existing ships have undergone refurbishments and renovations costing tens of millions, ensuring that guests have an onboard experience that can easily rival that of newer ships.

“Booking a cruise holiday on these existing ships can offer guests great value for money for their holiday whilst still being able to experience new and modern amenities.”

A TUI spokesperson added: “Our classic ships, Marella Celebration and Marella Dream are hugely popular with customers. As with our larger ships, they come complete with plenty of dining and bar options as well as a range of onboard facilities to suit couples, families and friends so there’s ample choice. And, like all our ships, there’s a lively onboard sense of community but with a more intimate atmosphere.”

Cruise industry insider Brandon Presser revealed he learned during his time as temporary director of Royal Caribbean’s largest ship, Harmony of the Seas to Bloomberg that subliminal messaging is a key part of the passengers’ experience – and they have no idea.

Presser explained that cruise ships have ways of strategically moving holidaymakers around the ships to encourage them to spend money in different areas of the vessel.

“If casino revenue is low, for instance, senior management might host a raffle or karaoke event at the far side of the slots to drive foot traffic and encourage passengers to linger (or better yet, play) a while,” said Presser.

“Activities managers will even film their daily newscast about onboard events with Starbucks iced coffees in hand, as a quiet reminder that passengers can get their venti latte fix on Deck Six. Often times, these veiled announcements are aimed at boosting the ship’s bottom line.”
