Is it OK to pose as honeymooners to blag an upgrade?

Telegraph Travel columnist Anna Hart answers your travel conundrums. This week? How naughty is it to fake a honeymoon in the hopes of getting holiday perks?..

Question: My girlfriend and I are going to the Amalfi Coast this summer. She loves the idea of telling people we’re on honeymoon, in the hope of getting room upgrades and lots of free champagne. I’d rather die. Which of us is in the right?

Answer: Ah, the ethical minefield of travel blagging. The out-for-what-they-can get camp argue that they are already paying through the nose for a holiday, so ill-gotten extras redress the balance.

The karma camp, on the other hand, argue that undeserved and unfairly purloined perks stick in the gullet – and might just choke you. Lie about being on honeymoon now, and a hex will be put on your Actual Honeymoon (if you live long enough to have one).
