Which Caribbean islands are most vulnerable during hurricane season – and can I cancel my holiday?

Hurricane Dorian has caused devastation in the Bahamas over the past few days. Reaching sustained speeds of up to 185 miles per hour, it is among the two most powerful Atlantic storms to strike land since records began.

The category five hurricane has left seven dead and led to widespread flooding and damage on the islands. It is now moving north around 100 miles from Florida’s east coast and could reach North and South Carolina later this week. 

The Caribbean’s hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30. The Eastern Caribbean and the US East Coast see the worst of storms from mid-August to mid-September. In the Western Caribbean the peak is mid-August to early November.
