The Seabourn Sojourn just might be the perfect choice, combining modest size, understated luxury and several dining options with a fleet of expedition-friendly zodiacs.
One of three identical sisters, the 458-guest ship is operated by Seabourn Cruise Lines, the ultra luxe subsidiary of the vast Carnival Corporation.
At a modest 32,346 gross tons, it features pleasing, dynamic design elements that keep guests in touch with the sea via generous forward observation vantages, an open bow area and an expanse of teak-lined decks.
Its tastefully appointed interior spaces include a skylight-topped spiral staircase, a dining room with twin alabaster domes and a compass rose-shaped observation lounge.
Built in 2010, the Seabourn Sojourn provides an inclusive cruise experience (tips, drinks and specialty dining) with doting service from 335 isnternational staff and crew that gives the ship an impressive 1 to 1.36 crew-to-guest ratio.
It also has six main suite categories, the most extravagant being a pair of 1,535-square-foot Signature Suites, although the 365-square-foot Veranda Suites are plenty spacious and far less pricey.
Dining experiences include the reservations-required but complimentary Grill by Thomas Keller with courses that are curated by the celebrity chef. There is also a full-service main restaurant, a casual buffet and a poolside cafe that transforms each evening into the al fresco Earth and Ocean at the Patio with an open kitchen and made-to-order selections.
The Seabourn Sojourn was recently fitted with a fleet of zodiacs, kayaks and expedition gear for its Ventures by Seabourn excursion program. By using the ship’s own equipment and staff, guests save on the overall cost of excursions and enjoy the convenience of departing directly from the ship. On Antarctic itineraries, zodiac excursions are complimentary.
