Americans warned to avoid Caribbean Airlines flights from Guyana
Trinidad-based Caribbean Airlines stepped up security measures at Cheddi Jagan Airport in Georgetown, Guyana, after the U.S. embassy in Guyana warned Americans against traveling on the airline between Feb. 10-12 on flights to New York.
The embassy posted the warning on Feb. 9 following a threat received by telephone call from Barbados, according to news reports. The embassy gave no details of the “unconfirmed threats information” but urged Americans to monitor the U.S. State Department’s website related to current travel warnings and alerts.
“The embassy has received unconfirmed threat information regarding Caribbean Airlines’ flights to the U.S., departing Feb. 10,” according to a release posted on the embassy’s website.
A response from Caribbean Airlines posted on its website said that “special security measures” are being put in place.
“Specific layers of security have been added at our Guyana airport operations. We are working closely with all authorities to ensure appropriate security protocols are followed to ensure safe, comfortable and on-time flight departures. All our flights are operating as scheduled.”
Airport officials urged passengers to be on the lookout for suspicious activities or occurrences.
Caribbean Airlines operates two daily nonstops between Guyana and New York and three flights that stop over in Trinidad.
