Today the sandy beach where Christopher Columbus stepped ashore in the name of Spain is part of the United States Virgin Islands. The year was 1493 and it was the explorer’s second voyage to the New World. Since his proclamation, seven flags have flown over the islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and St. John.
These jewels of the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean were at one time or another territories of Spain, England, twice-led by France, the Knights of Malta and the Danish crown. The Danes ruled for more than 250 years.
