Celebrity Edge: Take a Magic Carpet glide

At its lowest level, on deck 2, it becomes the embarkation platform for the ship’s fleet of tender boats – or launches, as Celebrity Cruises prefers to call them – equipped with comfortable padded seats, rather than the hard plastic benches that cruise passengers are used to.

The Magic Carpet is just one of the many new ideas on this 3,000-passenger ship, which was named in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on Tuesday by Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai.

As one of the first passengers on board Celebrity Edge, I was keen to try out the “infinite balconies” designed by former Dragons’ Den star Kelly Hoppen.

Cabins are made much bigger by “bringing the outside in”. Instead of an outdoor veranda the rooms extend to the edge of the ship – hence its name.
