Move over, Mickey Mouse, there’s a new captain on board Disney Cruise Line — Captain Minnie, reports Florida Today, which is part of the USA TODAY Network.
For the first time since the cruise line’s founding in 1995, Mickey’s main squeeze takes the helm, making an appearance at each ship this month, to spread a message.
“Our Disney characters have a unique ability to inspire and connect with children, and we know Captain Minnie will encourage young girls around the world to consider a career in the maritime industry,” Jeff Vahle, president of Disney Cruise Line, said in a news release.
Captain Minnie trades her red bow for a crisp new uniform with white pants or skirt and a red jacket emblazoned with captain’s insignia. Disney also plans new youth programs and scholarship opportunities.
Captain Minnie will make the rounds on all ships, the Disney Wonder, Disney Magic, Disney Fantasy and Disney Dream.

In 2019, Disney Cruise Line will sponsor four scholarships at the LJM Maritime Academy in the Bahamas for female cadets who aspire to be ship captains and shipboard leaders. The scholarships, one for each of the ships, will include tuition to the three-year program. The scholarships will include two years of study at the academy and one year of service aboard a Disney ship, the news release states.
Said Jeff Vahle, president of Disney Cruise Line: “We are excited to work with LJM Maritime Academy to offer scholarships for young women who are pursuing their passions and following their dreams in our industry.”

Disney hopes Captain Minnie spreads the message of exploring new horizons, by land and by sea.
New youth programs on board the ships, led by Captain Minnie, focus on STEM (science, technology, engineering and math). Guests can expect to see Minnie Mouse at homeports and ports of call, and with each visit, she’ll be accompanied by a female Disney Cruise Line officer or crew member.
With the new role comes new merch. Nautical-themed apparel and gifts say, “You Can Call Me Captain.”
