Following the incident the culprits have been named as Sebastian N. And Rubicel N, already known to police and suspected to be part of a much larger gang.

The robbers reportedly hid in an area of mangroves following the ordeal, from where thy made their escape.

Police spokesman Carlos Alcudia told local media: “It is not the first time that this has happened, the suspects have been arrested before but released due to lack of evidence, however this time it will not be the same.”

Since the incident The Secretariat of Security and Civilian Protection has released a statement confirming that two suspects have been arrested and are currently being detained;

However, despite reassurance from authorities, the crime will undoubtedly cause safety concerns for travellers destined for Mexico.

According to the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO): “The security situation can pose a risk for foreigners.

“Be alert to the existence of street crime as well as more serious violent crime like robbery, assault and vehicle hijacking.”
