Kerry Spencer, Editor of Cruise Critic, told Express.co.uk: “While booking an older ship has long been known as a great way to save money on a cruise holiday, an exciting trend that we’re seeing now is that cruise lines are making significant investments to update older ships in their fleets. 

“Historically, you’d see lines upgrading what’s known as ‘soft goods’ – things like bedding and carpets. The intent there was to keep the onboard experience fresh and remove any wear and tear that might come naturally with age.

“Where we’re seeing a change, is that these upgrades are going far beyond just soft goods.

“Lines are undertaking massive fleet-wide refurbishment projects, going as far as to add the bells and whistles that they’ve added to brand new ships to those older ships in fleet – as appropriate, and as they’re able.”
