Baltimore-based cruise ship suffered flu outbreak last month
BALTIMORE —
The Grandeur of the Seas, Royal Caribbean’s ship that runs out of Baltimore, suffered an outbreak of the flu.
On the trip from Feb. 8-20, the medical staff alerted the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention that 82 guests or crew members had flu-like symptoms or tested positive for influenza A or B.
According to a statement from Royal Caribbean, all were placed in isolation following medical protocol.
The CDC decided not to test any of the patients for the coronavirus because they did not meet the criteria for the testing.
Royal Caribbean released a statement, saying: “None of the patients had transited regions of impact or been exposed to anyone in the regions of impact, within 14 days of symptom onset.”
The U.S. State Department has issued a travel warning for people taking cruises in Asia. The Royal Caribbean website states the company has already canceled or modified most cruises in Asia through mid-March.
Last month, passengers on board the Diamond Princess cruise ship in Japan were quarantined on board after a sick passenger tested positive for the coronavirus. American passengers on board were eventually rescued from the ship and flown back to the United States. They were quarantined before they were released.
