Whether your dream honeymoon is a romantic beach vacation or a trek through the green hills of Ireland, booking through a travel agent is your best bet.

“You can look online for ideas, but what many people don’t realize is that as a travel agent I can match or beat those online prices,” says Hilah Mason, co-owner of Beaver Travel Center, a sponsor of The Times Bridal Fair on January 25. “We send hundreds of people to these destinations and get constant feedback.” Plus, Mason adds, it’s reassuring to have a local contact who can answer your specific questions or concerns about a resort or vacation spot.

Mason and several other agents from Beaver Travel Center will be at the bridal fair, passing out brochures and answering general questions. “It’s a great place for couples to make the initial contact,” she says.

Various Caribbean and Mexican resorts are still top honeymoon destinations, Mason says. “Many offer destination weddings and all-inclusive packages, and those are hard to beat, price-wise. They’re really our bread and butter.” She’s also seen an upswing in people traveling to St. Lucia and Jamaica in the past year.

Honeymooners who want to stay in the United States are picking Hawaii as a top spot, she adds. Europe – especially Ireland – has emerged as another popular destination.

Another country that’s become a top honeymoon draw in recent years is Costa Rica. “People come in and say, ‘I want someplace different,’ and for many of them, Costa Rica is the place,” says Mason. “It’s more eco-friendly, not as commercial as some of the Mexican resorts.”

Costa Rica features dense jungles and beautiful beaches, as well as a “cloud forest” and a volcano. Hiking, zip-lining, and water sports are all available.

Although most couples have a sense of what kind of honeymoon they want, Mason and her colleagues can make suggestions and walk them through some different options. “We can match you up with a particular destination for a honeymoon that’s geared specifically to you,” she says.

The earlier you book, the better, she adds. “Ten months out is not too early. You may be able to find something six months out, but you’re limiting your choices in hotels, etc. Your honeymoon is such a special event, you want to be able to have exactly what you want.”
