Newlyweds offered £450-worth of freebies during their honeymoon

It is often the most expensive trip a couple will ever take, but the honeymoon has become an essential luxury following a wedding.

But while newlyweds will splash out thousands of pounds on their ideal adventure after their big day, it seems they will also do quite well out of all the extras showered upon them.

The average couple receives £430-worth of freebies during their honeymoon, according to new statistics, making that expensive trip just ever-so-slightly cheaper.

From room upgrades to complimentary alcohol as well as hampers, treats and tokens left for the happy couple, it seems honeymooners can do quite well out of their trip.

The study by online travel agency sunshine.co.uk also found that couples were most likely to be given a room upgrade once the hotel realised they were honeymooners.

Nearly half – 41 per cent – said they had been given a better room during their trip, with a further 39 per cent being offered free alcohol, such as a bottle of Champagne to celebrate with.

A quarter of lucky couples received treats in their room or welcome hampers filled with goodies, while 19 per cent couple relax after their big day with free spa treatments.

A total of 13 per cent of those questioned said they also received complimentary meals during their stay as an extra for being newlyweds. 

When asked, ‘Were you offered any complimentary goods and services during your honeymoon when staff realised (or were informed) that you were newlyweds?’ 74 per cent of the respondents said ‘yes’. 

Chris Clarkson, Managing Director of sunshine.co.uk, said the following:

‘Honeymooners can often benefit from freebies during their stays abroad, but our top advice for newlyweds would be to pack a copy of their wedding certificate as proof that they’ve recently married. Hotels and service providers will often ask for this, to prevent couples telling a fib just to get an upgrade!

‘Our results show that it’s certainly worth informing your hotel if you are on your honeymoon; with the average couple getting over £400 worth of complimentary goods and services, that’s a lot of freebies you could be missing out on!’

According to You Your Wedding magazine, the average cost of a wedding in 2014 was £20,983, which is a 4.5 per cent drop compared to the average price of £21,939 in 2012.
