Carnival Cruise Line to ban passengers from bringing bottled drinks on board

Ban on packaged non-alcoholic drinks will go into effect on July 9
Move made to limit the opportunity for alcohol to be smuggled into cabins
However passengers over age of 21 still allowed one bottle of wine

Carnival Cruise Line is set to ban passengers from bringing bottled drinks on board.

The move has been brought about as the company tries to prevent alcohol from being smuggled onto its ships, with some passengers trying to disguise it as soft drinks.

Bottled water, soda and other non-alcoholic drinks will not be allowed on board, with the ban starting July 9.

Passengers who have existing cruise bookings with the US-based company received the news today, as did travel agents.

Ports and the Carnival website will also advise of the change of rules. All staff will be permitted to confiscate the bottles.

Passengers will be permitted to bring a 12-pack of soda or juice on-board, as long as the drinks are packaged in cans or cartons.

Pre-ordered bottles of water can be ordered at discounted prices and delivered to the cabins.

The move has been made to cut alcohol smuggling as well as speed up the boarding processes, as all liquids currently have to be searched.

Spokeswoman Jennifer de la Cruz told cruise reviews and information website Cruise Critic: ‘This is something that we’ve been grappling with for quite some time.

‘The main goal is to try to ensure safety for our guests and to decrease the likelihood of a security incident that’s tied to smuggled alcohol.’

Passengers will, however, still be permitted to bring one bottle of wine or Champagne on board in hand luggage, as long as they are over the age of 21.
