Carnival reveals plans for four next-generation cruise ships
Carnival Corporation has revealed plans to build four next-generation cruise ships, which it claims will be the first to be powered by liquefied natural gas.
Each of the vessels will have a capacity of 6,600 guests. Two will be manufactured at Meyer Werft’s shipyard in Papenburg, Germany for German brand Aida Cruises, while the other two have not been designated to a brand.
“These ships will expand our leadership position for the Costa Group, the market leader in all the major European markets,” said Michael Thamm, chief executive of Costa Group, which includes Aida.
“These will be spectacular ships designed specifically for our guests who sail on our Costa Group brands.”
The contract with Meyer Werft is part of larger previously announced strategic memo of understanding with leading shipbuilders Meyer Werft and Fincantieri for nine new ship orders between 2019 and 2022.
