Our Honeymoon Only Cost Us $1 A Day
If you look at my friend’s Instagram posts, this is what you’ll see:
“Back from the #honeymoon in France, wishing it never would end!”
“Off to Costa Rica with my love!”
“Hawaiian Honeymoon… here we come!”
Now, I swear, I am not jealous or bitter…okay, maybe a little. But a trip like the ones my friends were taking… just weren’t in the cards for us.
We were married three months ago, and the wedding was perfect. But let’s just say the past six months have been wonderfully busy and have taken a toll on our finances. My husband and I saved and paid for our own wedding, attended/participated in six (yes SIX) weddings of our close friends on top of completing grad school and re-entering the workforce. Our bank accounts and schedules didn’t necessarily allow for the long, lavish, post-marital travel extravaganza that one might expect. You know, the one where we post an unheard of amount of awkward selfies, strategically posed bathing suit pics and document every “AMAZING” meal we ate…
This led to a lot of this:
Google Search: “Cheap honeymoon ideas, that don’t suck”
Google Search: “Is it bad to ask for more vacation days your first day on the job?”
Google Search: “Staycation honeymoon… is that a thing?
Along with my search attempts, I brainstormed with my travel expert of a friend, Stephanie about ideas for a laid back, yet adventures honeymoon. She told me to look into a company that is new to the states called imoova.com. Apparently you can rent an RV for a buck a day, which seemed totally bogus.
Skeptical how it worked, I researched the business and found that it was totally legit, had amazing reviews and are a big deal in Australia and New Zealand. You see, mates, imoova is what’s called a rental relocation agent, which means they work with rental companies to return rented RVs camper vans back to their original rental location. Since the RV needs to be returned anyway, they are able to rent it to you at an EXTREMELY reduced price, as long as you get the vehicle back to the destination within their given timeframe.
Transportation and lodging for $1 a day… uh yeah, we were IN!
There was an RV available in three weeks that needed to be driven from LA to San Francisco. And just like that, our honeymoon road trip up the California Coast was booked! We decided to bring Stephanie and her boyfriend, Shane, along too. So yes, we opted for a double-date honeymoon trip that involved sharing an RV with another couple for two nights. No, we are not swingers.
DAY 1:
We picked up our rig from Apollo RV Rentals in LA on Friday after work. We were equally delighted and terrified when we were shown to our RV because this “Minnie Winnie” was not so Minnie… it was HUGE! We felt like we were a touring rock band with this thing! The amenities were incredible: stove, refrigerator, two queen beds, a shower, toilet and a main area that rivaled the size of my living room.
Hitting the road a little later than planned (around 6:30pm) was really a blessing in disguise. As we navigated our way up Highway 101, we really began to feel like we were on vacation as we enjoyed a glass of wine from our new home on wheels (passengers only) overlooking the sunset along the coast. We made it to Santa Barbara and hit up the good old California standby, In-N-Out Burger. It’s what romance is made of if you ask me.
