Civitavecchia has a long sandy beach, an interesting little archaeological museum and plenty of cafes and bars.
It is also Italy’s gateway to Rome, with a rail service that will take you straight there in just over an hour.
Ships’ excursions are worth considering, though, to avoid getting caught up in possible train delays.
Once there don’t miss the Forum, where Julius Caesar and Mark Anthony once walked.
You can get a double ticket for the Forum and awe-inspiring Coliseum round the corner.
The queues at the Forum are much shorter and you won’t have to queue for a ticket at the Coliseum, which is a bonus.
Take a few hours designer window-shopping on Via Conditti or just wandering around near the Spanish Steps.
And don’t forget to throw a coin in the fountain of love – Trevi Fountain – to make sure you return some day.
Naples is another dream destination, offering history and culture but also food and fun.
The world’s first pizzeria opened here in 1830, so make sure you try a slice of the real meal while you’re here.
Catch the local train to Pompeii for the few minutes’ walk to the Roman city overlooked by the brooding volcano Mount Vesuvius, or stay on the same train to the seaside town of Santorini for a stroll along the promenade.
Pompeii is a fascinating place, but if you prefer to stay in Naples you can see many of Pompeii’s treasures at the city’s archaeological museum.
Also look out for the Roman ruins beneath Naples itself, and have a look at some of the churches that are like works of art in themselves.
