Travelers worried about weekend weather

HOUSTON – Severe weather headed to the Houston area Saturday was expected to impact the busy holiday travel weekend.

One couple landed in Houston on Saturday after a week in San Diego for their honeymoon. They flew through the same storm headed to southeast Texas.

“When we flew over Lubbock, when we first came in the Panhandle, he warned us there may be some turbulence so there was a little bit of that on the flight,” said Claire Sparks.

Many passengers and their families were glad they made it to town before severe weather hits Sunday.

“I wouldn’t want bad storms when they come in. Flight delays and other things like that,” said Greg Leech.

Leech’s daughter Alexandra and her 7-year-old daughter Bella flew in from Nashville, Tennessee.

“Just spend time with the family, celebrate a late Christmas, just enjoy time together,” Alexandra Leech said.

While the Leech family enjoyed a late Christmas, Ryley Norrick waited at the airport headed to Dallas.

“It’s delayed just a couple of hours. I was suppose to get out of here at about 8 p.m. and now I’m not getting out until 10 p.m. or 11 p.m., said Norrick. “Apparently, there’s some bad weather in Dallas.”

Meteorologists expected those delays to increase as the storm rolled in and caused issues in the region.

“They’ll likely ground both major airports, Bush and Hobby until those storms slide on through cause they don’t want any problems with the planes trying to take off in those strong winds,” said Channel 2 News meteorologist Justin Stapleton.

In the meantime, Norrick enjoyed barbecue and a beer, with hopes of making it home soon.
 
“Luckily, I grew up here so I have friends in town who have offered to pick me up and give me a place to stay for the night, so I’m in good hands either way,” said Norrick.
