If you’re like a lot of Americans, you’ve never heard of Hurtigruten, a coastal and expedition cruise operator that has most of its ships in Norway. But if you’re looking for an unusual way to visit multiple cities along the East Coast next year, you just might want to take a look at its latest offering.

The 14-ship company, which is a household name in Norway, this month announced plans to deploy one of its hardiest expedition ships along the Eastern seaboard in 2018 for a pair of 12-night voyages. 

Taking place in April and October on the 318-passenger Fram, the “Coastal Gems of America” sailings will be one-way trips between Halifax, Nova Scotia and Miami that include stops in Bar Harbor, Bucksport and Rockland, Maine; Boston; Newport, R.I.; New York City; and Charleston, S.C.

Hurtigruten also plans a voyage on Fram out of New York to the Canadian Maritimes. 

The trips will be Hurtigruten’s first to visit the United States and take place as Fram is moving between the Arctic and Antarctica — its primary stomping grounds. Unveiled in 2007, the 12,700-ton vessel was specifically designed for travel to the polar regions with a strengthened hull that allows it to navigate through sea ice. Stout and sturdy, it carries motorized rubber landing craft in a cavernous internal storage area and has extensive observation decks. 

Based in Norway and popular with Europeans, Hurtigruten is perhaps best known for a fleet of cruise ferries that sail along the Norwegian coast between Bergen and Kirkenes. Eleven of the company’s 14 ships are dedicated to the route. Hurtigruten also has been a pioneer in Arctic travel and is a leader in Antarctica voyages.
