With fast-growing Hurricane Maria bearing down on the Eastern Caribbean, cruise giants Royal Caribbean and Carnival are making more changes to itineraries already scrambled by Hurricane Irma.
Royal Caribbean late Sunday said the 5,400-passenger Allure of the Seas — one of the world’s three biggest cruise ships — would skip a call Thursday in St. Kitts to avoid the storm.
St. Kitts only was added to Allure’s itinerary a few days ago as a replacement port for Irma-ravaged St. Maarten — the Dutch side of the island of St. Martin.

Allure now will head to Falmouth, Jamaica instead, Royal Caribbean said.
Also on the move to avoid Maria is Royal Caribbean’s Puerto Rico-based Adventure of the Seas, which is heading for Aruba and Bonaire instead of planned stops in Antigua, St. Lucia and Barbados.
Carnival late Sunday announced that itineraries for three vessels already modified due to Irma would again be changing due to Maria.
The 2,974-passenger Carnival Glory, which departed Miami on Saturday, now is heading to the Western Caribbean instead of The Bahamas, Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic. It’s the third change to the ship’s itinerary since the middle of last week. Glory originally was scheduled to visit Half Moon Cay in The Bahamas; St. Thomas; San Juan, Puerto Rico; and Grand Turk Island. On Thursday, the call at St. Thomas was dropped; on Friday the line replaced Grand Turk with Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic.

Also making a last-minute switch to the Western Caribbean from the Eastern Caribbean is the 3,690-passenger Carnival Magic. The Port Canaveral, Fla.-based vessel also has seen multiple changes to its itinerary in recent days.
A third Carnival ship, the 2,056-passenger, San Juan-based Carnival Fascination, now will operate a cruise to Grenada, Barbados, St. Lucia, Antigua and St. Kitts. Its original itinerary called for stops in St. Thomas and St. Maarten.

Both St. Thomas and St. Martin were devastated by Irma, which barreled across the islands as a Category 5 hurricane. Some officials have hinted it could be many months before they are ready to receive tourists. In an interview with NPR on Wednesday, the governor of the U.S. Virgin Islands said he hoped St. Thomas could be back up and running for tourism by January.
In addition to St. Thomas and St. Martin, cruise ship destinations significantly affected by Irma include Key West, Fla.; St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands; Barbuda; St. Barts; and Tortola in the British Virgin Islands.
As of 8:00 a.m. ET, Maria was 85 miles east of Martinique and moving to the west-northwest at 12 miles per hour. The storm had maximum sustained winds of 110 miles per hour.
The National Hurricane Center on Monday said Maria is likely to strengthen significantly, and is expected to be at major hurricane intensity when it affects portions of the Leeward Islands over the next few days. It is likely to bring dangerous wind, storm surge and rainfall hazards to the region, the agency said.
The National Hurricane Center also said Maria is likely to affect the British and U.S. Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico by mid-week as a dangerous major hurricane.
