The parade of Baked Alaska is making a comeback on Carnival cruise ships.
The once-a-cruise procession of Carnival waiters carrying the classic dessert into dining rooms — a one-time staple of Carnival sailings — has reappeared on the line’s 3,936-passenger Carnival Vista and will be reintroduced fleet-wide by early next year.
Carnival did away with the procession in dining rooms several years ago, but “strong feedback from guests” prompted an about face, Carnival spokesman Vance Gulliksen told USA TODAY.
It turns out the flamboyant arrival of cake and ice cream topped with meringue is as big a crowd-pleaser as the cake itself.
“Response has been excellent,” Gulliksen said of the confection’s reappearance on Vista. “Guests really enjoy both the delicious dessert as well as the traditional parade by our waiters.”

The return of Baked Alaska comes as Carnival is revamping the menus for several of the specialty dining venues on its ships. Breakfast menus in main dining rooms also are getting an overhaul.
Carnival also is re-branding its 24-hour pizzerias to Pizzeria del Capitano. The pizzerias now will offer five kinds of hand-tossed, thin-crusted pies.
